We All Live in the Yellow Submarine
What happens when you put three bright, foolhardy, and bored sophomores together in search of a project?
Early in the fall of 1999, Nidhi Kalra, Serguei Vassilvitskii, and I decided to form a team to represent Cornell in the Third International Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition. Under the generous sponsorship of Professor Kevin Kornegay, Electrical Engineering, two independent teams were formed in late September/early October. Little did we know of the challenges that were to face us in this daunting systems engineering task. In June 2000, due to a shortage of summer manpower, the teams were merged to a unified Cornell team, and the race was on to complete the submarine for the competition.
We won Second Place, tying with two-time winner and competition favorite MIT.
